Saint Ambrose is unusually open about its bar: a total age standardised score of 320 across the three papers, which the school calls the qualifying score. Clearing it puts a boy in the running and nothing more. The 140 places are then ranked by the school’s ten Catholic admissions categories, and inside whichever category a family falls into, by Pupil Premium first and then by who lives closest. So the score is the gate, and the category is the queue.

Common questions
A total age standardised score of 320 across the three papers. The school calls that the qualifying score and publishes it openly, which is rarer than you would think. Reaching it does not by itself win a place.
No, and the last of the ten published categories is simply “other boys”. The categories are led by baptised Catholic boys, so faith affects the queue rather than the test. Catholic families upload a Baptism Certificate with the registration form.
Only inside one category. The nominated Local Pastoral Areas cover every WA14, WA15, M31 and M33 postcode, and they rank baptised Catholic boys within the third criterion. For everyone else, distance is what separates boys already in the same category.
Not from the school. The Maths and English papers are written in house and never released, and the school points parents at GL’s free familiarisation material for the Verbal Reasoning. Working steadily through the Key Stage 2 curriculum is the honest preparation, since the Maths goes up to the Year 5 programme of study.
