The test, in one look
Chesham Grammar sits the Buckinghamshire STT, set by GL Assessment.
GL Assessment sets the 11+ for most grammar schools in England, including this one. Papers are multiple-choice, and scores are age-standardised: children born at different points in the school year are marked against slightly different scales, so a summer-born child isn’t disadvantaged. Because GL is the most widely used format, familiarisation materials and practice papers in the same style are easy to come by.
Because GL is multiple-choice and age-standardised, the two things that move a score are accuracy under time pressure and covering every question type rather than the comfortable ones. Up to 6 places go to catchment children on Pupil Premium who score 110 to 120, that is up to 11 marks below the 121 bar. It applies only if your child was not deemed qualified at a selection review and did not apply for one.
How places are decided
186 places for September 2027. Reaching the required standard puts a child in the running; this order decides the rest.
8 ranked criteria decide the order. Where the school can take some but not all children qualifying under a rule, priority is decided by taking account of the next rule(s) in the list; the final tie-break is distance, then supervised random allocation.

- 1.Looked after children and previously looked after children.
- 2.Up to 6 places in Year 7 for children living in the catchment area continuously from 1 September of the year preceding entry who are in receipt of Pupil Premium at the time of application and whose standardised Secondary Transfer Test score is between 110 and 120 inclusive (i.e. up to 11 marks below the 121 threshold applied to other applicants), and who have not been deemed qualified following a selection review and have not applied for one; within this category looked after and previously looked after children are prioritised, then distance.
- 3.Children living in the catchment area continuously from 1 September of the preceding year who qualify for Pupil Premium at the time of application.
- 4.Siblings of children in Years 7 to 12 on the roll of the school both when allocations are made and at the time of proposed admission.
- 5.Qualified children of CGS staff employed on a permanent contract for at least two years at the time of application, or recruited to a post with a demonstrable skills shortage (excludes staff employed by other employers on the school site).
- 6.Children living in the catchment area continuously from 1 September of the year preceding entry.
- 7.Children with exceptional medical or social needs which can only be met at this school, supported by evidence from an independent professional person.
- 8.Any further places offered in distance order, straight-line, from the family's normal home address to the main school entrance on White Hill.
For September 2026 entry the furthest place went to a child living 3.7 miles away, under the distance criterion. Every place above that was filled by the criteria higher up the list.

How pupils here do at GCSE
This is based on how pupils at this school go on to perform in their GCSEs, five years after the 11+. Attainment 8 is their average result across eight subjects. Read it as a description of outcomes rather than of teaching: a selective school admits children who were already scoring well at ten, so a high position here reflects who the school takes in as much as what it does with them.

Common questions
Usually not. Children at Buckinghamshire primary schools are entered automatically unless a parent withdraws them. Everyone else, including children at independent schools in the county and at primaries outside it, has to apply to Buckinghamshire Council for testing by its published deadline (2 June 2026 for 2027 entry).
121. Unusually, every Bucks grammar school uses the same qualifying score, so it is a genuine county-wide bar rather than a per-school one. Reaching it makes your child eligible to be considered; it does not hold a place, because the schools then apply their own catchment and priority rules.
There is a Selection Review. A child who does not reach 121 can be put forward, usually by their primary school, and a panel considers wider evidence of academic ability. Being deemed qualified that way counts the same as scoring 121. Several schools also ring-fence places for disadvantaged children scoring a little below the bar, 115 to 120 at the schools whose policies we read, so it is worth reading the individual school's policy.
Two papers sat on the same day, each about an hour including the introduction and practice examples. Between them they cover Verbal skills and comprehension, Maths, and Non-Verbal or Spatial Reasoning, all multiple choice and standardised for age.
A great deal. Most Bucks grammar schools rank catchment children ahead of everyone else once qualified, and the catchments are published as maps rather than postcode lists, so check your address against the school's own map or the council's postcode checker. Residence usually has to be established by 1 September of the year before entry and held continuously.
On your home council's application form by 31 October 2026 for 2027 entry. Sitting the test does not apply for a place, and several schools also want a supplementary form by the same date if you are applying under a Pupil Premium or looked-after criterion.
