The test, in one look
Dr Challoner's High sits the Buckinghamshire STT, set by GL Assessment.
GL Assessment sets the 11+ for most grammar schools in England, including this one. Papers are multiple-choice, and scores are age-standardised: children born at different points in the school year are marked against slightly different scales, so a summer-born child isn’t disadvantaged. Because GL is the most widely used format, familiarisation materials and practice papers in the same style are easy to come by.
Because GL is multiple-choice and age-standardised, the two things that move a score are accuracy under time pressure and covering every question type rather than the comfortable ones. Within the 180 places, up to 12 go to catchment girls on Pupil Premium or in care who scored at least 115. If those 12 are not filled, up to six of them go to girls in the same groups scoring 110 to 114, below the county bar of 121.
How places are decided
180 places for September 2027. Reaching the required standard puts a child in the running; this order decides the rest.
Catchment: Yes, defined only by a map. Note the residency date: she must have lived at the same address continuously since 1 April in the year before entry, not 1 September.
Children with an EHCP naming the school are admitted first, outside the criteria, and the PAN is reduced accordingly.

- 1.Looked After, Previously Looked After, Internationally Adopted and Internationally Adopted Previously Looked After girls (LAC/Post-LAC, IAC, IAPLAC).
- 2.Girls in receipt of Pupil Premium, including Service Pupil Premium, who qualify and live in the catchment area on or before 1 April in the calendar year preceding entry (1 April 2026 for September 2027 entry).
- 3.Within the existing PAN of 180, up to 12 Year 7 places for girls resident in the catchment area who are in receipt of Pupil Premium (including Service Pupil Premium) or are LAC/Post-LAC/IAC/IAPLAC at the time of application and who scored at least 115 in the admissions tests; if those 12 are not filled, up to six of the 12 go to girls in the same catchment and disadvantage categories scoring 110-114 whose score would not otherwise qualify them. Within this criterion, LAC/Post-LAC/IAC/IAPLAC are prioritised first, then a straight-line distance tie-breaker to the main entrance on Cokes Lane.
- 4.Daughters of staff employed at the school for two or more years at the time of application, and/or recruited to fill a vacant post with a demonstrable skill shortage.
- 5.Girls living in the catchment area on or before 1 April in the calendar year preceding entry (1 April 2026 for September 2027 entry).
- 6.Sisters of girls on the school roll at the time allocations are made who will still be on roll at the time of the proposed admission.
- 7.Girls with exceptional medical or social needs that can only be met at this school.
- 8.For points of entry other than Year 7, girls with the highest aggregate score in the in-year tests.
- 9.Any remaining places in distance order, by straight-line distance from the normal home address to the main entrance on Cokes Lane.
Where the school can take some but not all girls qualifying under a rule, the next rule(s) are used to prioritise; final ties are broken by distance and then by random ballot supervised by an independent person.
For September 2026 entry the furthest place went to a child living 3.4 miles away, under the non-catchment siblings criterion. Every place above that was filled by the criteria higher up the list.

What an EHCP is: an Education, Health and Care Plan, a legal document from your council for a child with special educational needs. Where a plan names a school, that school has to offer a place, so those places are taken out of the number above before anyone else is ranked. It is not a route most families can apply through.

How pupils here do at GCSE
This is based on how pupils at this school go on to perform in their GCSEs, five years after the 11+. Attainment 8 is their average result across eight subjects. Read it as a description of outcomes rather than of teaching: a selective school admits children who were already scoring well at ten, so a high position here reflects who the school takes in as much as what it does with them.

Common questions
Usually not. Children at Buckinghamshire primary schools are entered automatically unless a parent withdraws them. Everyone else, including children at independent schools in the county and at primaries outside it, has to apply to Buckinghamshire Council for testing by its published deadline (2 June 2026 for 2027 entry).
121. Unusually, every Bucks grammar school uses the same qualifying score, so it is a genuine county-wide bar rather than a per-school one. Reaching it makes your child eligible to be considered; it does not hold a place, because the schools then apply their own catchment and priority rules.
There is a Selection Review. A child who does not reach 121 can be put forward, usually by their primary school, and a panel considers wider evidence of academic ability. Being deemed qualified that way counts the same as scoring 121. Several schools also ring-fence places for disadvantaged children scoring a little below the bar, 115 to 120 at the schools whose policies we read, so it is worth reading the individual school's policy.
Two papers sat on the same day, each about an hour including the introduction and practice examples. Between them they cover Verbal skills and comprehension, Maths, and Non-Verbal or Spatial Reasoning, all multiple choice and standardised for age.
A great deal. Most Bucks grammar schools rank catchment children ahead of everyone else once qualified, and the catchments are published as maps rather than postcode lists, so check your address against the school's own map or the council's postcode checker. Residence usually has to be established by 1 September of the year before entry and held continuously.
On your home council's application form by 31 October 2026 for 2027 entry. Sitting the test does not apply for a place, and several schools also want a supplementary form by the same date if you are applying under a Pupil Premium or looked-after criterion.
